Best Atlanta Neighborhoods for Runners

Best Atlanta Neighborhoods for Runners

Whether you enjoy taking a scenic stroll down the sidewalk or running long distance trails, Atlanta has a number of noteworthy neighborhoods that are perfect for running. Though Georgia may be hot, running outdoors is much more enjoyable for most than constantly being cramped up in a gym. Whether you check out the Atlanta BeltLine intown or the Big Creek Greenway in Forsyth County, you will never be disappointed by all the greenery and sights that Georgia has to offer. Here are a few of our favorite running spots around Atlanta:

Smyrna

There are several paths that wind through Cobb County, but one in particular that begins in Smyrna is the Silver Comet Trail. Traveling through Cobb, Paulding and Polk counties, this trail is a quiet, paved space that allows only non-motorized activities, including running, rollerblading, biking and so much more. Smyrna has grown tremendously in recent years, and now the ability to live near one of the area’s most popular trails has never been easier. The Silver Comet Trail begins at the Mavell Road trailhead and winds westward until it connects with Alabama’s Chief Ladiga Trail at the Georgia/Alabama state line.

Downtown Atlanta

One of the largest and most popular trails throughout the city is the Atlanta BeltLine. This eventual 22-mile loop winds through the city and connects to popular neighborhoods, Ponce City Market, MARTA and several connecting trails. This hotspot is currently made up of five trails and seven parks and is easily accessible from neighborhoods all over the city, including Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward, Tanyard Creek and more. The BeltLine is constantly expanding and growing and is the perfect spot for a nice jog, but this particular area may take a few days to conquer.

Woodstock

If you’re someone who enjoys being outdoors, this area is perfect for you! Woodstock has several trails, but the most popular would have to be the GreenPrints Alliance Trail. And after taking a jog from a Highway 92 at I-575 or Towne Lake Hills toward downtown Woodstock, there is always an exciting event to enjoy happening nearby. From movie showings to outdoor concerts, Woodstock is one of the most family-friendly neighborhoods in Georgia.

Forsyth County

Known for being a linear path that has breathtaking greenery views throughout its entirety, Big Creek Greenway in Forsyth doesn’t disappoint. There are several races ranging from half marathons to 10Ks happening along the trail throughout the year. The Forsyth portion of the trail spans about 9.6 miles, but there are several spots to get on and off the path with ease. The Forsyth Greenway begins at McFarland Road, passes through Fowler Park and ends at Bethelview Road.

Suwanee

The Suwanee Greenway is six miles roundtrip and provides the option of a paved greenway and boardwalks. This trail is pet-friendly and has wildlife-filled views. The Greenway even has several trails that branch off, providing easy access to longer paths or to Suwanee shops and entertainment (as well as excellent restaurants for some carb-loading).

Midtown

Atlanta's Piedmont ParkYou can’t have a list of metro Atlanta’s best places to run outdoors without Piedmont Park! Open daily from 6 a.m. till 11 p.m., Piedmont Park offers over 200 acres of space ideal for fitness activities of all kind. There are miles of scenic walking and jogging paths throughout the park, with scenic views to enjoy and plenty of places to stop for a rest, from Saturday morning’s Green Market to the educational garden and multiple playgrounds to the public pool.

With Atlanta’s constant growth, it’s no surprise that more cities and counties are finding new ways to preserve greenspace while also growing their communities and giving residents a fun way to get outside. And for running enthusiasts, this ideal balance of preservation and growth offers great opportunities to get out there and hit your stride.
