Located approximately 25 miles north of Atlanta, Alpharetta is a vibrant city suburb that is growing by leaps and bounds. It is known for everything from its excellent culinary offerings to its abundance of outstanding recreational hot spots.
Where to Stay The Hotel at Avalon and Alpharetta Conference Center places you near the center of it all. This world-class hotel and meeting space is located at Avalon, a walkable community of shopping, dining, lodging, working and entertaining. It is Alpharetta’s first four-star hotel and conference center, and it boasts a blend of luxury comforts and boutique sophistication. Each room features plush bedding, a 55-inch flat-panel television and ergonomic workstations. Guests also have access to an outdoor pool, a fully equipped fitness center, room service dining and more.
Where to Eat Not far from Avalon is Alpharetta City Center, a recently revitalized downtown district that offers an array of excellent dining experiences. One to check out is Restaurant Holmes, located in the former historic Jones House right on Main Street. A walk-in restaurant, the eatery offers creative small plates brimming with seasonal local ingredients. You’ll find 20 dishes that are perfect for sharing, including pork belly and housemade ravioli. Restaurant Holmes also offers a tight list of six cocktails, eight beers on tap and approximately 30 wines. Diners are encouraged to sit down, order, share and eat together.
What to Do What’s dinner without a show? Fortunately, Alpharetta is home to the Ameris Bank Ampitheatre, which is set on 45 acres of beautifully landscaped wooded land. In the center of it all is a 12,000-seat state-of-the-art music venue which offers an impressive lineup of performances by today’s leading recording artists. Its season, which runs from April to November each year, attracts some of the best acts around; the 2019 season will welcome Train, Goo Goo Dolls, Dave Matthews Band, Brad Paisley, Heart and Peter Frampton (on his farewell tour).
Travel about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta and you’ll make your way to the town of Braselton, which offers a blend of bucolic beauty and historic charm. The jewel of the area is its downtown district, which is undergoing a major revitalization effort. Year-round activities and a thriving tourism industry make Braselton a go-to spot for anyone who wants to get to know North Georgia.
Where to Stay European luxury meets Southern hospitality at Château Élan, the most-awarded winery and resort on the East Coast. The Inn at Château Élan features guest rooms that replicate the architectural and interior elements of a French country estate, as well as luxurious bedding and a host of delightful amenities. The Inn, which is currently undergoing a $25 million renovation, also has a 24-hour fitness center and resort-style pool and hot tub. It’s an excellent destination for a romantic getaway, girls’ weekend or summer staycation.
Where to Eat Big city fine dining can be found at the Cotton Calf Kitchen, where dry-aged steaks, fresh seafood and more delight diners. Located in the modern, industrial-chic surroundings of the historic Braselton Brothers Department Store building, the restaurant is a 120-seat white tablecloth classic American steakhouse that also includes such delectable dishes as heirloom vegetables and an array of tapas-style appetizers. There also is a roomy lounge and bar area with a beverage menu featuring craft beers, small-batch whiskeys, bourbons, classic cocktails and an extensive wine list.
What to Do If you’re staying at Château Élan, relaxation is right outside your door. The Spa at Château Élan is a wonderful place to set your worries aside and find serenity. A destination for both women and men, the European-style spa overlooks a sparkling lake, a canopied forest of trees, emerald green lawns and flowering shrubs; spa treatments are available for individual guests, as well as couples. And after a day or evening of pampering, you can cap off your stay the next morning with 45 holes of championship golf at the Château Élan Golf Club; the challenging course is managed by Troon Golf and features unparalleled views of North Georgia’s rolling hills and valley lakes.
Just south of Atlanta and only 25 minutes from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the master-planned community of Peachtree City. It boasts eight hotels, more than 100 restaurants and countless entertainment options, most of which can be accessed at 15 miles per hour via more than 100 miles of paved golf cart paths.
Where to Stay The Peachtree City Hotel and Conference Center offers resort-style accommodations on 19 picturesque wooded acres. It features spacious rooms with balconies, high-tech in-room amenities, 42-inch high definition televisions and more. The hotel also provides access to two restaurants, a swimming pool, a fitness center and racquetball courts, among other features. Meeting facilities are available as well.
Where to Eat If you’re looking for an excellent gastropub experience, then head to The Curious Pig, located in the heart of Peachtree City. Owned and operated by Chef Scott Smith, the restaurant serves up nouveau Southern cuisine, including specialties like shrimp and grits, fish tacos and twists on classic dishes like pimento cheese and collard greens. A farm-to-table focus and a premium bar featuring local and regional beers make this a can’t-miss spot.
What to Do There’s nothing like a little music under the stars—so head to The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater, also known as The Fred. A beloved hot spot in Peachtree City, this popular, 1,600-seat outdoor venue regularly hosts Grammy-winning performers, as well as national and international touring acts. Every season, the calendar is jam-packed with fantastic shows; this summer’s Butler Lexus of South Atlanta Concert Season includes such acts as the Spin Doctors, 10,000 Maniacs, The Bacon Brothers and The Lost 80’s (with A Flock of Seagulls, The Motels and more).
